Online Course Delivery Methods and Resources Guide

Teaching Practice 

Online/Remote Options

General Set up 

1.     Acquaint yourself with all online teaching and course delivery tools prior to going live. 

a.     ITS recommends these tools 

b.     Prepare for the worst: have a backup plan if your method fails. For example, if you are using Collaborate or Teams for a class meeting have a forum or chat in Moodle ready where you can communicate quickly with students should problems arise.  

2.     Ensure that your home Internet connection is reliable.

3.     Update your browser and operating system.

4.     Ensure that you have the proper hardware: web cam, computer and charger.  Check to see that your computer meets minimum requirements and view some suggestions for hardware peripherals to augment your setup that you may want to consider.

5.     Hold or host all course events inside of your Moodle course found at moodle.stfx.ca.

6.     Upload all course content to your Moodle course(s).

7.     Have accommodations for students with no nternet. 

8.     Ensure your course outline is up to date on your Moodle page.

9.     Ensure students know how to use Moodle, Collaborate and Teams. 

Deliver lectures synchronously

1.     Choose your platform: Collaborate or Teams: use Collaborate for regular lectures. For smaller classes consider the use of Microsoft Teams.

2.     Hold or host all course events inside of your Moodle course found at  moodle.stfx.ca

Deliver lectures asynchronously

1.     Choose your method: Use Teams, Collaborate, Screencast-O-Matic or PowerPoint to pre-record lectures.

2.     Post recorded lectures to Moodle using OneDrive or Stream.

Manage communication and class participation 

1.     Use Moodle to contact students 

2.     Hold virtual office hours using Collaborate, Microsoft Teams or Microsoft Bookings.

Design learning activities 

1.       Use the Moodle discussion forums to transfer some of the in-class activities and organize class discussions online

2.       Post online simulations, collections or demonstrations for discussion, critique or analysis using Screencast-O-Matic 

3.       Have students present using Microsoft Teams or Collaborate

4.       Use the Moodle quizzing feature to assess learning 

Group projects & group work 

1.     Encourage the use of Microsoft Teams for student collaboration 

2.     Inform students of options to meet virtually (e.g. Microsoft Teams or Collaborate sessions). 

3.     Adjust your Moodle gradebook to reflect changes in course material and delivery.

Final exams and assessments

1.     Explore Moodle quizzing, Respondus Lockdown Browser, and ProctorU.

2.     Explore alternative assessments such as group projects, reflective writing, written or photo essays and research.
